Our Wedding and the Road Back After 4+ Years of Long COVID

From Survival to Celebration: Our Wedding and the Road Back After 4+ Years of Long COVID

For the past four years, life has looked very different for my wife Kelly and me.

What started as a routine decision—to get vaccinated during a global pandemic—turned into a long and difficult journey through chronic illness. Not long after, we both found ourselves dealing with persistent symptoms that didn’t go away. What followed was a period marked by uncertainty, setbacks, and a complete redefinition of what “normal” meant.

The Long Road

Living with long COVID isn’t just about physical symptoms. It touches everything—energy, mood, relationships, work, and your sense of identity.

There were long stretches where progress felt nonexistent. Days where even simple tasks felt overwhelming. Plans were often cancelled. Life became smaller, quieter, and more focused on getting through each day.

We both experienced waves of symptoms—fatigue, nervous system dysregulation, poor sleep, and the kind of exhaustion that doesn’t go away with rest. It was unpredictable and, at times, isolating.

But over time, something began to shift.

Small Wins That Added Up

Recovery didn’t happen all at once. It came in small, almost unnoticeable steps:

  • A slightly better morning
  • A bit more energy in the afternoon
  • Fewer crashes after activity
  • More emotional stability

We started to rebuild slowly—focusing on consistency rather than quick fixes.

Our approach became centered around:

  • Supporting the nervous system
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Creating routine and stability
  • Listening to our bodies instead of pushing through

These small wins compounded. And eventually, they started to form something we hadn’t felt in a long time—momentum.

Choosing to Move Forward

At some point, we realised we weren’t just surviving anymore.

We were improving.

And with that came a decision: to start living again, even if things weren’t perfect.

Getting married wasn’t about waiting until we were 100% “back to normal.” It was about acknowledging how far we had come, and choosing to celebrate life in the middle of recovery—not at the end of it.

Our Wedding: A New Chapter

Our wedding wasn’t just a milestone in our relationship—it was a symbol of resilience.

After everything we had been through, standing there together felt different. There was a deeper sense of gratitude, perspective, and connection that only comes from facing something difficult side by side.

It marked a transition—from a period defined by illness, to one defined by rebuilding.

Getting Back to “Normal” — Redefined

Normal doesn’t look exactly the same as it did before.

And that’s okay.

We’ve learned that “normal” isn’t about going back—it’s about moving forward with a new understanding of health, balance, and what truly matters.

We’re now at a point where:

  • Energy is more stable
  • Symptoms are manageable or fading
  • Life is opening up again

There’s still awareness. Still intention. But there’s also space again—for plans, for growth, and for the future.

For Anyone Still in It

If you’re in the middle of your own long COVID journey, it can feel like it will never end.

But progress is possible—even if it’s slow.

What helped us most wasn’t chasing extreme solutions, but staying consistent with the basics, being patient, and adapting along the way.

You don’t have to be fully recovered to start living again.

Sometimes, healing and living happen at the same time.

Final Thought

This chapter of our lives tested us in ways we never expected. But it also gave us perspective we wouldn’t trade.

Getting married wasn’t the end of the journey—it was a marker of how far we’ve come.

And for the first time in a long time, the future feels open again.

If you or a loved one could use a chat with someone who has been through this process, get in touch. The chat meets you where you’re at and is all about you. In a world filled with doctors, there seems to be a short supply of healers. My wife and I have spent over $150,000 NZD since 2021 experimenting and trying everything under the sun to fix our symptoms. That information can be explained to you in a short space of time saving you time and money; allowing you to make the right decisions to enable the body to heal itself.
